“This award shouldn’t come as a surprise to Trainer’s customers. We enjoy working with Trainer on a daily basis and value the fact that all of its people are very senior. They challenge us to think about communications in a strategic manner that truly differentiates our technology offering rather than just executing ‘cookie cutter’ public relations programs. Trainer has been instrumental in the maturation of IPWireless from a fledgling start-up company into a leading global provider of mobile broadband solutions.”

With more than 20 years of experience in marketing communications and public relations, Gary Good has played a leadership role in major launches by industry leaders, including SBC Communications, Fluke Corporation, Nortel, Agilent, Dialogic, and Baan. He has also assisted a variety of start-ups with external communications and senior-level counsel through their early-growth and IPO stages.
Prior to joining Trainer, Gary led technology groups for two international public relations firms, directing the Fleishman-Hillard San Francisco office’s fast-expanding telecommunications group from 1997 to 2001, and GCI Group’s entire technology business in its San Francisco office in 2002. Formerly, he spent seven years providing PR counsel and product-launch services to category-leading firms in networking, semiconductors, engineering development tools, test and measurement, new-product design, and IT services.
Ranking near the top of Gary’s accomplishments is his work directing public relations programs for SBC Communications, where he took a leading role in the company’s transformation from “provider of regional telephone services” to “leading global provider of data products and services.” His work was instrumental in helping SBC win Fortune magazine’s title of World’s Most Admired Telecommunications Firm in both 1998 and 1999.
Gary has won the PR industry’s highest award – the Silver Anvil – for the launch of SBC Communications’ Project Pronto initiative, and a CIPRA award from Inside PR for the launch of SBC Communications' DSL service.
In his spare time, Gary enjoys exploring the California coastline, running, and working with wood – until baseball season starts, and then none of that matters for the next six months.
Q&A
- Favorite food: Thai -- every other cuisine is trendy at one time or another, but Thai food remains the food of the gods
- Did you know? Gary is ambidextrous, but not conventionally. He throws and bats a baseball, golfs, and dribbles a basketball left-handed; he writes, eats and bowls right-handed; he throws a Frisbee with either hand.
- Greatest PR success: Establishing ABEL as a standard in chip design, and securing a congratulatory letter to my CEO from Andy Grove
- Hero: My grandfather, who, at 93 years old and in a wheelchair, navigated through the front door of his senior residence and up a steep hill in Seattle before being "apprehended."
- Most embarrassing moment: Walking in the front door of a house where I thought an estate sale was taking place, and interrupting a wedding that was underway
- Favorite vacation spot: Kauai, and especially the south shore
- What I would do if I didn't work in communications: act on the stage (if anybody would have me!)
